Wierd. What happened to basically all of Page 2?

Zhukov put some good thoughts down, and I wanted to refer back to those...

The biggest problem with your approach is the glossy look. If you think a tree as a lump of mass, it has matte surface.

I suggest trying a different approach: First make few versions of a single branch, then versions of different darkness of each version. Construct your tree out of these, putting the darker versions of the branches on the shady side.

Look at this http://www.ambrosiasw.com/games/coldstone/addons.html. Look at the files listed as Fantasygamegraphics 1&2.

I remembered I had seen these a while back. They're some good overhead graphics, a good example for what I assume your trying to get at. Though they're a little more 3d, less sprite.
