IMO, Firebug/Firebird/Firebeast don't really fit, since the unit itself doesn't really seem to have anything that would link it to a bug/bird/beast. Fireflight/Firewind/Windfire/Flamewind/Firewhirl/Flamewhirl don't really fit to me either - they sound like something that would better fit in a Jinn line, or something like that.

For the Jundi -> Muharib -> Batal line, I think Gladiator is really out of place. I propose
Mercenary -> Flanker -> Saboteur or
Mercenary -> Ranger -> Saboteur.

-> Monawish -> Mighwar line, I think Commando sounds to modern. I quite like Skirmirsher -> Harrier proposition so I don't have much to add here.

For the Naffat -> Qatif-al-nar -> Tineen, I like a few propositions but I'd also add Torcher -> Firebrand -> Firetrooper and Naffat -> Scorcher -> Firetrooper.

And we would not want a unit entirely based around fire attacks in a near-eastern themed faction in a fantasy game setting to be a creature made of "smokeless fire" from near-eastern mythology. That would be too fitting cliched.

So we had better stick to names that elicit the image of a medieval arabian ghostbuster with a hand held greek fire gun. ^_^

I'd like to withdraw several of my suggestions that don't seem to have gotten any traction, or that I feel have better versions.

for the Jundi -> Muharib -> Batal line, please remove the following:

Rover -> Mercenary -> Ranger
Rover -> Explorer -> Ranger
Rover -> Adventurer -> Explorer

That leaves the following for consideration:
Rover -> Adventurer -> Ranger
Fighter -> Warrior -> Champion
Fighter -> Warrior -> Ranger


I have no removal or addition suggestions for the Monawish -> Mighwar, there seems to be a manageable number of suggestions for that one.


For the Naffat line please remove all of my previous proposals that have not been pickup by anyone else.
I'm not in favor of using Firebrand or Torcher anymore. Also not in favor of keeping any of the old names.

What I would like to see considered:
Scorcher -> Combuster -> Wildfire
Burner -> Scorcher -> Firetrooper
Scorcher -> Combuster -> Firetrooper

How about:

Firemaker -> Firemaster -> Firelord
Firewielder -> as above

Flamemaker -> Flamemaster -> Flamelord
Flamewielder -> as above

Though the trouble with these as well as most of the ideas suggested so far is they sound distinctly like drake units.

Actually I was probably going to vote for rover->explorer->ranger... :| Maybe you could leave that option in?

Cold Steel: I don't particularly like any of those names.

That was kinda intentional, linking back to my earlier idea of making the L3's name evocative of the jinn.

I guess it's fine this way as well, but wouldn't these polls be a bit less sparse (less choices) if we voted separately for each unit, instead of all the possible combinations?

Yes, but we're running out of time. 1.13.11 is scheduled for Feb 4th, which is when the string freeze will be started, which means after that nothing that affects translations will be accepted. So if all the names aren't decided and a PR changing them created before that, then the name changes won't be accepted until the 1.15 release cycle starts.

While the old id's are being deprecated, adding advances_to would ensure filters don't break when the unit advances & help with compatibility.

I think we'll be ready enough. I think the unit names will resolve well enough. Unit descriptions could be better, but are serviceable. Although it would be nice, we don't need a race description in time for 1.14. (Side note: Falcons, Saurians, & Wolves still need one as well, Writer's Forum threads welcome)

Might want to hold off on falcons though, since we might decide to turn them into rocs.

Speaking of which, that's one thing this whole rename scheme seems to have excluded from the start; they came up in discussion but were never on the list of units to change. Were there any plans to look at the falcons in addition to the human dunefolk?
