Miscelanious ideas

Post by James DiGrizz »

I'll be short.

Forest tiles of deciduous trees. Green(spring, summer), yellow(autumn\fall), without leaves(winter).
It's a little boring when I look, while playing, at the Wesnoth map and see, mostly, pine and palm trees. A little color can't harm anyone, right?

What's with the undocumented tile I call the "sand hills" tile? In-game help doesn't say what it is, so I thought, maybe they are sand dunes, cleverly masked to appear as "green hills" tile in yellow tones. :D
Really, shouldn't they look like dunes?

Rare forest. Tiles that act as woods or plains according to the unit that occupies them. It was done with bridges, maybe it could be done again.
Hills with forests on them. Same as above.

Wheather effects. Rain and snow. Doesn't mess with gameplay, but could look nice! Did someone say storm? I thought I heard: rain, with (cheap :D) flashing effects.

Oh, and last, why can't I set labels in the editor :x ? Example: I'm making a map. I draw a mountain range and a mountain pass. I spell B L A C K M O U N T A I N across a few tiles and High pass on the pass. That would be nice, wouldn't it now  ?

If you like any ideas on this post, please support them.

P.S. excuse the bad grammar and spelling, if any.

New terrains aren't really fit for the ideas forum anymore. If you want deciduous tree tiles, then make them. Here are some people working on it: http://www.wesnoth.org/forum/viewtopic. ... us#p334532

The dunes tiles look like dunes to me.

Forested hills are in the dev version. If you're not using dev, you shouldn't be making threads in the ideas forum.

Weather effects have been talked about. Search for it.

The map editor doesn't include labels, because labels aren't part of the map.

Hi James, and welcome to the forums!

1. If you take a look around Art Contributions, maybe here, before you posted--you'll see that in fact someone shared your idea, and is/was working on it!

2. Not sure which tile you are referring to.

3&4: Try making such tiles yourself--you'll soon find out that giving something like that a whirl is te best way to get people interested!

5. Not sure, but if you trying using the search feature for weather effects, I'm almost positive this has been discussed before, so reading old discussions might give you insight about this. My personal opinion is that it would look too busy and distracting, but that's me.

6.Being able to place labels in the Map Editor sounds like a good I idea--I didn't realize that one couldn't!
...please remember that "IT'S" ALWAYS MEANS "IT IS" and "ITS" IS WHAT YOU USE TO INDICATE POSSESSION BY "IT".--scott

this goes for they're/their/there as well

Thank you for the information.

Dunes? Don't they have a more... oval shape than hills?

A dune:

Hills:

but, really, the tiles do look really alike, aside from the colors, I mean.

Wesnoth will swallow up as many terrain variants as we choose to throw at it. There are five distinct types of sand dune that could be drawn, just for the desert tiles. Hills, grass and forest present even more variation. It's a question both of prioritising, and of some sufficiently-talented sprite artist showing up who wants to have a go at drawing new sets of terrain tiles. Googling for types of dune got me the following interesting link: http://pubs.usgs.gov/gip/deserts/dunes/

In fact, the game already has about 1200 files and 8Mb of terrain graphics

Welcome to the forum James DiGrizz.

Please try to do a search before you post, especially in the Ideas forum. All of these ideas have been raised before, and I posted the links for the majority of them below.

There is nothing wrong with bringing a previously discussed idea up again, but only on certain conditions. IF there was no obvious conclusion the last time it was discussed AND you have shown that you read the old threads, developed your own detailed ideas/theories, and are willing to adequately explain in your first post why that idea should suddenly be considered again.

Unless you really want to remove the topic,

The issue with the dunes is that it needs drawings, but you knew that already...
The big thing is that there is 4 sand terrain, and that the dunes must be different from the desert and from the mountain for the player to know this is a hill at first sight,

This is an alias of hill and desert, so the solution, i think, was to keep the impression of the normal hill tile when those were designed.

But you're right about them, personally i prefer them than the mountain + desert (or than dirt transition?! =°), but well, this is personal opinion ...

as other people said, beetlenaut is on deciduous trees,
for the labels in the editor that's a good idea even if, i think, it won't be implemented, i personally take a pen and paper, it works well  , (even if it's not too much next gen...)

See ya.
