How Fast Is Your Internet Connection Speed?

Post by atomicbomb »

Yeah... That's the question..

1.How fast?
2.How much you pay for it?
3.What other services are bundled with it (if any)?
4.Are you happy with it?

My answer:

1.60Kbps :annoyed:
2.IDR200K (US$22,2) Too expensive,isn't it?
3.No bundled services
4.Of course no.

1: 100 mbps I believe, is the limit of the router, 54mbps for wireless. The advertised speed is 8MB, but that depends heavily on the local exchange.
2: £20 or so IIRC, but we also have to pay line rental. I don't really recall, it's paid by direct debit.
3: Nothing extra apart from phone.
4: Reasonably so when it's working, but the customer service sucks.

Reason: Mbps, not kbps >.<

1. 1.5mbps
2. $60 a month
3. Phone
4. Not particularly. It's often much slower than advertised.

1. 3mbps up, 0.5mbps down.
2. $30-40 a month for just the DSL part
3. (television, but at extra cost)
4. I love it, because it's fast enough, and unlike many ISPs, it works exactly as advertised. Virtually no outages, and the speed is always precisely what's advertised - no more, no less.

I have so many bad experience with my connection speed. Too many, the most tragic is when I downloaded wesnoth (which takes 2 hours) and I realized that I downloaded Linux version, not Windows(happened two times). And today, my connection speed went below 14 Kps.

1. Allegedly 512 kbps, but it seems to wobble around a fair bit. Also, I have a rather limited data allowance before the speed gets throttled.
2. AU $90 / month.
3. Nothing.
4. No. It is slow, unreliable, has a limited cap, and is outrageously expensive. Unfortunately, it is the only option I have due to technical reasons. May be able to upgrade soon due to new infrastructure being installed in my area.

Is your connection wireless? In the US, companies can't legally throttle wired connections. Perhaps it is different in Australia. That makes me wonder, do other countries throttle their Internet per data usage?

I believe they're just not allowed to throttle connections based on the content you get (for example: Comcast can't suddenly reduce your speed because you started using Netflix or Hulu). Across the board bandwidth quotas to all customers are probably still legal.

I'm going to make some people jealous…
  1. 40 Mbps (40 down, 1 up)
  2. $30/mo.
  3. DSL only
  4. Hell yes!
It was a promotional rate for 6 months… but after that I called in and they offered the rate for another year.

Actually, this topic interested me and I did a little research. Apparently legislature on this very issue just got overturned in February. Companies now CAN throttle connections on content in the US. Here's a link to an article I found about it, if anyone else is interested: http://www.dailytech.com/US+House+Votes ... e20947.htm

@Ancestral: That is very fast DSL. I assume you mean 40 megabits per second?

The vast majority of internet connections in Australia are throttled after a certain data allowance per month is exceeded, except for mobile phones and such. The most common alternative is that you are charged obscene amounts once you exceed your quota (which is the normal model for phones). There are some plans which claim to be "unlimited", but they usually have small print which lets them throttle for "excessive usage", or only allows unlimited use during "off-peak" times, or something like that. And of course they tend to be more expensive.

That is very sad. That sounds like the standard mobile phone plans over here. Most of the "unlimited" data plans have download caps at about 2GB or 5GB.

1. Down/up: usually 10+/30+ Mbit/s (almost never below the advertised 10/10 Mbit/s)
2. About EUR 20–25 or USD 20–30 per month
3. Domain name as well as the usual e-mail accounts and homepage space
4. Quite so; somewhat expensive but a rather good deal compared with the competitors
