Finally got around to buying The Andromeda Strain. I'm going to read it now. Luckily I found a book that contained both it and The Terminal Man, so I'll be reading that too.

Just read Robinson Crusoe. For some reason I had never read it before.
Now, I am on to Dune.

Just read Grendel by John Gardner, currently reading One Hundred Years of Solitude by, uh, wotsisname, somethin'-or-other this-or-that-Marquez.

EDIT: Gabriel Garcia-Marquez, I think.

This Silmarillion is great, but hey, the number of characters! I think I will have to take notes the next time I read.

Finished Elves of Cintra by Terry Brooks, no comment :annoyed:

also reread some short stories by Stephen Donaldson, which although I had read them before were a million times better than the worthy above-mentioned piece of literature.
...apparenly we can't go with it or something.

Happened to me with Treasure Island. Never read it before although it is considered a classic. Problem is only that I decided to read it in the original (English) and, as a German, had trouble with the pirate(or sailor)-speak. This also restrains me from reading Moby Dick. Does anyone have experience with that book in terms of readability?

I used to have a really long commute most weekends. Me and the person riding with me would often listen to audio books, and this was one of them. I have to say, that listening to this book was very beneficial to me. I have extreme difficulty sleeping in a car, regardless of how tired I am, but those problems vanished with this playing. With the background noise, my mind wouldn't wander to do it's own thing, but the background noise was so incredibly boring that my mind would fight to ignore it, leaving me with an idle mind in a state conducive to sleep.

I usually like classics, but I certainly don't consider them good just because they are considered classics.

As far as the language, there is a certain amount of seaman talk. It is a bit difficult for me to remember, because the narrator would naturally adopt a rough, growly voice for a lot of seamen (he was really a good narrator), and also because being a native English speaker, my mind skips right over the accents and slang. But I would put it as about the level of Treasure Island, possibly a bit worse.

You'd do well to get another opinion though.

OT: No, I am not.

Those first two chapters of the Silmarillion were lovely.

Children of Dune right now; I read Dune last summer and Dune Messiah sometime in the winter. I dunno why I read them in such big gaps... currently my order of favorites is Children - Dune - Messiah.
