IIRC, I stumbled upon a similar incompatibility issue when installing certain eras for Wesnoth 1.2.2. It caused Wesnoth to lock-up when trying to start (local) multiplayer games or campaigns.

Something I really hate is websites that have background music or animations. Really. This is not a website for kids, got it? :evil:

I mean, it's really annoying, consumes precious network traffic and system resources. You'd better turn on Winamp or XMMS and play music in the background.

If you're building it, IIRC, you must pass --enable-python to the configure script. Python (do you mean the library?) should be installed on your system, both the development libraries and runtime libraries, if you are compiling Wesnoth. If not, you only need the runtime libraries.
