I imagine that this start gold, set by the devs, is also tested by the devs? I also imagine that they would be rather elite wesnoth players... Wow, that's a new concept :) No, not really. Currently, there is always a minimum starting gold, which is what the scenario designers feel is at least the smallest amount necessary to get you through the scenario, and you will always get that. It's known and going to be fixed in next release. For now find _main.cfg for the campaign, edit it and move [binary_path][/binary_path] block above #ifdef declaration. After restarting wesnoth you'll have the proper sprites again.

You need to edit the savefile as well, replacing configs in midcampaign doesn't help for units.

Out of curiosity, would you be willing to send this via PM for interested individuals? I wouldn't mind at all if someone wanted to take a look, especially if it would help them critique the unit lists.
