Re: Scenario Review: NR 7 - Settling Disputes

I don't understand what the bottom of the level is for. I'm playing this on (don't laugh!) Easy - first time I'm playing the campaign. The part of the pass that forks through the west then south - it's totally empty with no units nor any - seemingly - events I can trigger. So why even have it?

Re: how to compile wesnoth on debian ?

Dumb way to do it: 1. install `cmake` (when I say install `something`, I mean `apt-get install something` as root). 2. Download the source tarball 3. Unpack the source tarball 4. In the source root dir, run `cmake -B build` 5. Repeat until build configuration succeeds: 5.1 Note the name of the missi...

LTO and harden switches

Three questions: 1. Is it useful to enable link-time optimizations (LTO) when building? 2. Is it _safe_ to enable LTO when building? 3. Why is executable "hardening" enabled when building? Why do I need "hardened" executables? I'm building on a Devuan GNU/Linux Chimaera machine, ...

Re: Carrer paths for Zlex and Tallin?

So, Swordsman it is. Another reason not mentioned by Lord-Knightmare and otzenpunk is better predictability: A 4-hit blade attack is more likely to have damage close to its expected damage relative to a 2-hit blade attack (the Pikeman's). This fact, the resistance and the extra movement point trump ...

Career paths for Zlex and Tallin?

I'm just starting Northern Rebirth (on the easiest difficulty for now). My Zlex is just about to level up from Spearman, and I was wondering: Which would be a good choice for him? I'm guessing Javelineer would be a poor choice despite the unit's nice balance, since I don't plan on losing him, and it...

Re: Any tips for Pebbles in the Flood? (The South Guard)

A retroactive tip is that the scenario after pebbles in the flood is pretty easy (assuming you finished the previous scenario with decent carry-over gold and veterans). So easy, in fact, that you are likely not to even need the northern fortifications, the illuminating campfires (which are annoying ...

Re: Recruit vs Recall of L1 units with partial experience

If you recall your advanced (non-loyal) units first, and you need more than one turn of recruiting, you're wasting gold. Simply starting with loyal and low-level units, you may save enough on maintenance to be able to recruit/recall one more unit than if you recalled the L2s first. Yes, that's a va...

Re: Recruit vs Recall of L1 units with partial experience

In some scenarios it is possible to trade gold for XP. So, generically, what would you say a recall XP percentage (or XP point) is worth in Gold? I mean, the entire difference is under 10 Gold anyway; would you pay, say, 5 Gold for 25% XP? 50% XP? 75% XP? (Of an L1 unit, so something between 30 and...

Re: Any tips for Pebbles in the Flood? (The South Guard)

You can cheese this mission by retreating to the mountains in the northwest corner; just recruit all the footpads you can and place your whole army in that corner. Do you suggest moving everyone North immediately, or sticking around for a bit to fight the initial scattered Undead? Also, is it bette...

Re: Suggestions to improve Wesnoth if we had $500,000?

I always felt elves needed their own "mage" unit etc. Is that really something that has support at the moment, and is just missing the developer/designer/author time which large amount of money would buy? ... Remember, this thread is about how we/the project would use $500,000 - not about...

Re: Suggestions to improve Wesnoth if we had $500,000?

I'd like to ask those folks discussing gender and race issues in Wesnoth to consider switching to a different thread, because it seems to be a longer/deeper discussion that is entirely orthogonal IMHO to the question of how to use a potential monetary windfall. (And note I said orthogonal, not usele...

Recruit vs Recall of L1 units with partial experience

Suppose you're playing a (campaign) scenario where you don't have a whole lot of gold. And suppose also you've recalled L>=2 units if you had them and wanted them. But - you also have some L1 units from previous scenarios. An L1 that's almost-leveled is usually a good recall prospect, assuming you c...

Re: Suggestions to improve Wesnoth if we had $500,000?

I voted "Other" as one of my options - apparently the only one. My "Other" idea is setting up a small organization (< 1 FTE) which would center around a fund. It would coordinate some longer-term money-generating activity - not IP or ad sales but things a donation/contribution cr...

Re: The South Guard

nemaara : The initial campaign dialog mentions the "Heart forest" as lying to the South of Aethenwood. However - the map doesn't mention it, and instead has two other forests to the South of it: The Southwood and the Black Forest. Also, we have the "Heart Mountains" in the North...
