My favorite unit is Witch https://units.wesnoth.org/1.14/Ageless_Era/en_US/AE_mag_Witch.html. Old version though, when it was 4-4 instead of 3-5, so drain worked better. I would proxy wesnoth.wml_actions.unit to save flag of unit creation, and in unit placed event collect the id if flag is set. That is if the [unit] calls are not from your own code.

Not the real problem, but name=second_unit.marked should be name=second_unit.variables.marked It would not be visible in damage calculations, but you could [harm_unit] the extra damage when attacker/defender hits. Say if it is important that damage calculation works correctly. As far as I remember, ...

1.15 supports [damage] as ability.

That option is designed exactly for your use case. So as it doesnt work, I move it further to technical support. You can also create issue for it.

I tried it out with 1.15.2, custom maps looked ok - empty, but when opening random maps got crash with Exception code=0xc0000005 flags=0x0 at 0x00000000008703A9. Access violation - attempting to read data at address 0x0000000000000000 1.14 does fail asserts, but that does not seem to break anything.
