If something was lost via versioning, then it lacks the popularity necessary for it to have a maintainer, hence lacks the support necessary to be considered for mainline. Bug #20742 [Gna.org], which will be fixed in 1.10.7, which is supposed to come out... soon? (Releasing 1.10.7 has been talked about, but the schedule changed at least once, so I don't want to promise a date yet.)

If you compile the game from the source files, you can fix this with the instructions there.

They (meaning the non-recolored units) don't look silver to me. They do have a bluish hue, but not silver that I can see.
