Re: good orcs ?

Tolkien was very black-and-white in his thinking, and he drew on a lot of theological background and symbolism. He believed in absolute good and absolute evil. This differs from many modern fantasy authors and their tendency toward subversion, which has reached almost to the point that the subversio...

Re: good orcs ?

Just to clarify, all of the orcs in this post are Irdyan. Again, I'm coming back to the notion of evil (including such things as 'sin' and 'redemption') in non-humans. As I said before, humans are social creatures and what we judge to be "evil" is often putting the needs of the individual above that...

Re: Birth of the Empires space TBS game (open source)

Thanks for the reply. Alternatively since the Android port is reprogrammed in JAVA, there are native versions for either Windows and Linux (don't know if they are the latest release versions but they work): Linux 64 bit: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4EHyHgXdsckVXZLY184Z1QzdEk/view?pli=1 Yep, th...

Re: Birth of the Empires space TBS game (open source)

I've been playing this on my phone today and I'm finding it enjoyable so far. I like the colorful cast of different aliens, and the details on the different planet types (like saying this type is like Pluto, for example) make exploration more interesting. I only have two negative criticisms: 1: The ...

Re: The Logic Behind the Dwarvish Name List

Yeah, in retrospect, my proposed system is entirely too deterministic even for dwarves, and I'm not proposing that any authors be bound by it. ;) I just started with something and got really carried away, but I figured it might provoke some discussion on the cultural aspects of dwarven naming conven...

Re: The Logic Behind the Dwarvish Name List

Warning: I put way too much thought into this. If you don't want an in-depth analysis on my current headcanon of dwarven nomenclature, feel free to skip this post. My current headcanon is that every dwarf has a regular name made of three pieces (perhaps one from the father, one from the mother, and ...

Is the Runesmith's hammer supposed to be moving in a circle? It looks like a stirring motion.

Re: Saurian sprites

European maces of the morningstar variety had sharp spikes, should these have piercing attacks? Those still act like clubs, working with blunt force trauma -- breaking, crushing, rupturing -- by mass and brute force, rather than by poking the target to death like a spear or an arrow. A macua...

Re: Saurian sprites

The macuahuitl is more of a sword than a mace. Saying that obsidian chips are razor sharp would be unfair, as obsidian can be actually far sharper than any steel razor. Giving it a damage type of impact would be crazy. See multiple accounts of dismembering horses: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macua...

Re: Beta testers needed: Endless Sky, a space exploration ga

ETA: I had a look at the preferences now, it is the backquote character. In order to type this character, I have to hit Shift+accent and then space. So, I can't generate this character as a single keypress event. I recommend "n" as the standard hotkey for this. I agree that the placement of this ho...

Running on Wine under 64 bit Linux Mint, it ran for a while and then crashed while trying to make a jump (after several successful jumps).

Here's the crash output:

Re: [UMC] Level 4 ghoul

The latest version is too cluttered in my opinion. I don't think adding more tiny parts is the way to go (they'd never show up in a sprite anyway), but maybe just making it more distorted, bloated, etc.

Here's an example that came to mind: http://sssscomic.com/comic.php?page=260
