Re: Northerners still giving me grief.

Why didn't you attack during that night? You had a force of a bunch of grunts, and you move them into a... defensive position? Rather than simply killing the exposed elf on a village with four grunts or so? And then you retreat from the position, all onto the right side, rather than onto the more de...

Re: What went wrong?

You have to compromise between the two ideas. On Weldyn Channel I don't usually think it's a good idea to have many scouts and thus even if it would be more efficient to go with them I generally don't get more than one. Depending what faction I'm playing I might know that I want certain units and I...

Re: What went wrong?

Thank you, Velensk. I can only speak for Red, but a few responses and questions. I'm not altogether comfortable with the Elvish Scout. He seems to me to cost an awful lot for a unit with 4-3 / 6-2 attacks and a whole lot of move. Things have... gone badly for me in using them before. However, the cl...

What went wrong?

Hi everyone! I was playing against one of my friends on Weldyn Channel, and I won. Easily. By the end of the game, I had lost 4 units, and she had lost 14. She asked me for advice of what went wrong, and... well, I'm not sure. On my end of things, it just felt like she was attacking me with too few ...

Re: Whatever happened to 1 vs. 1 ?

Well, I only play 1 vs 1 on local games, since when I play on the MP server, they kick my butt severely. Also, when people have played Wesnoth for 5+ years, like many of the people on the MP server, they (Some) get bored of the typical game, and start playing really well modded Wesnoth, which resul...

Hmmm... I might try something like this. Except probably rapid-fire commentary on one of my replays.

Re: Map statistics

Ah, okay. So I cranked around with it all in Open Office Calc, which I only slightly know how to use. I would do Excel, but I can't get it up. No love for file format? Dunno. https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AoWFMrDhlKRldC1jelFtMGJpOWp0ZFFGWFp2RE1hOFE&hl=en&authkey=CNjsj8AH (Does that help? ...

Map statistics

Being the curious soul that I am, I wondered what the frequencies of terrain are in the maps that I play on. (This is the basic "flat" "forest" sort of thing, not the "road" or "farm" sort of thing.) I've been staring at the map files, which sort of make sense to me, but are also somewhat confusing....

Useful Replays to watch for learning

I am a mid-level player (competentish), and I was curious if there were any multiplayer replays (for 1.8) that are worth watching in that they illustrate particular strategies being well implemented, or small, important details. I am a student of strategy, but my lack of tactics specific to this gam...

Re: The Point of Goblins?

The lack of speed is the thing that gets me, strangely. Lack of health, fine. But I really want to use this unit to attack things, but when I'm attacking (night), everything manages to outrun the Gobbos. It's not like I can hide them, either, as four movement means they are seen a long time before t...

Re: How do I use mages more effectively?

Slightly obvious, but when you attack a unit with a mage, don't just look at the damage done with the ranged attack, but also check the melee combat stats. If the unit survives, even with 1 or 2 HP it may very well go for the mage and get to do it's full attack - should that 5-1 swipe miss. It's jus...

Re: I learnt the importance of retreating

Retreating is probably my most effective tactic. Wesnoth makes it easy for people: most of the time you can just look at the time of day, and if it favors you, press conflict, and if it does not, avoid conflict. Partly because of the day-night swing, retreating is very important. If my enemy is lawf...

Re: What went wrong here?

For TonePoet: I realize that about the 1v1 maps, but I find that it wasn't just the lack of a middle village, it was that there was such a large (i.e. more than a unit's movement) distance between the lower villages and the upper villages. This is as opposed to a continuum, as in, say, Freelands. Al...

Re: Factional jack or specialist?

I played random on my very first multiplayer game, and got a matchup of playing Undead vs. Rebels. That went badly, and I looked up a bunch of guides and figured out how not to die to mages, and why not to attack elves in forests. I then became rather decent at Undead, but I started winning, and win...

Re: What went wrong here?

Thank you in advance, I suppose. Also: How good am I and JRK at Wesnoth? I feel I have a pretty decent sense of what is going on, but is that just me being full of myself? I'm not a complete newbie, and I am better than my friends, but how do I compare against the average folks on the main servers? ...
