Re: how does luck work in wesnoth?

Luck is what makes this very different from, say, Chess. In chess, you move a piece, and that will be what happens. In Wesnoth, your units may or may not succeed, and you should plan for both cases. Perhaps what you perceive as constant bad luck is you taking big chances when you have, say, an overa...

Re: How to defend against village-snatching distractions?

Necro'ing my own thread to help with context. I played another game against ME (who had been taking a break from losing to me at wesnoth since the previous two defeats in this thread), and beat her again. There was a gold advantage for her in this battle, something like +4 gold for her, and -2 gold ...

Re: How to defend against village-snatching distractions?

Turn 6: I don't like where you moved your units. Me could have attacked your fencer with 2 wolfs, a grunt and a naga if she kills the fencer without using the naga she can use it to capture your water village and attack your bowman. I figured she wouldn't attack through the water with the grunt and...

Re: How to defend against village-snatching distractions?

I agree with Caphriel - in multiplayer you only really need to hold onto one or two extra villages to swing the balance of things. Your advice seems to be more for singleplayer (or free-for-all games where someone just died). Huumy: I emailed your advice over to MysteryExclamation, so she will be lo...

Why are some factions overused or underused?

So I was reading through this thread again, and decided to count up people's preferences. This is very rough, since some people described what they played, and some people described what they thought other people over-played or underplayed. However, I think the results are pretty striking. As Rowant...

Re: How to defend against village-snatching distractions?

Ask and you shall receive. On the attached game, ME thinks she lost because she didn't run away during the dawn. I'm not sure, though I think that's where I got the game-winning advantage. I think part of it has to do with how she attacked. Of course, I know I always play in the mindset of playing D...

Re: Faction Breakdown

Here's another way to look at them: Offensive: Kills units outright, then uses the resulting superior numbers to not die. Bit weak in straight-up combat. Tries to stay out of combat when not decapitating the enemy at nightfall. Defensive: Loves their favored terrain, bit weak / cost ineffective off ...

Re: Spearman promotions

I'm not a campaign player, here's my thoughts: Swordmen are blade superiority fighters - their favorite target is enemy grunts, not entirely unlike cavalry. In fact, you could see them as unmounted cavalry fairly easily. Halberdiers are built to be anti-horse and be pierce superiority fighters - the...

Re: Northerners vs Undead advice requested

I would agree with most of what has already been said, save for a Time of Day thing: In Chaotic versus Chaotic, or Lawful versus Lawful, time of day still matters. Your offensive power still goes up, it's just that their power goes up as well. What doesn't go up? HP, defenses, village healing/regene...

Re: How to defend against village-snatching distractions?

Thank you, you two - your thoughts have been conveyed over to Mystery Exclamation. Watching the replay, I do see a lot of her units loafing around, or congregating together in clumps. I don't play singleplayer, but she does - perhaps the bit with moving in formation is a hold-over from that? It prev...

Re: New site

Information on Wesnoth creatures is already available ;) While this is true, there's still a lot of related information that could be used. For instance, I once did a bunch of stuff on secondary statistics: HP/gold, attack/gold, etc for units, and the frequency of assorted terrain types over in the...

How to defend against village-snatching distractions?

I've been playing MysteryExclamation (ME) since I started Wesnoth, and it has gone from me generally being defeated by her, save for the odd leader-gank, to me crushing her consistently. In our last game, I gave her +4 income, to see if that might even things a bit, but I wound up defeating her just...

Re: The most overused and the most underused faction

tl;dr: Rebels are common for new players, until they go random; undead and drakes don't get the love, Northies to a lesser extent. I started playing with a bunch of my friends, all at the same time, though I wound up getting sufficiently better than them fairly quickly. Almost all of them originally...

Re: I found a flaw about Spearmans description!

Primarily, I would simply say that elves are weaker than humans, but faster: Note that human speed is three attacks, elf-speed is four attacks, and orc-speed is only two attacks. With the Fencer, a human gets to attack 4 times, but is, again, weaker. My assumption that elves fight like fencers, unwi...

Re: Doubt with sorting criterion

How hard would it be to provide both options? "XP needed to level" and "XP achieved"?

Not sure if it should mainline, but would a downloadable system to customize menus and stuff would be very nifty.
