Re: Faction/leader choices - random?

Weakness to leader-ganking is an interesting metric to apply to leader choices. As loyalists, I do this a lot, and as Knalgans, I've used the threat of a suicidal Urf to force a good defense for a marksman. I'd really like to see a chart of when an Urf has what chance against which leaders, but sinc...

When stuff gets serious, I generally choose drakes (or undead)! Everyone else just seems weak.

Re: Dwarvish guardsmen (in 1 vs 1)

I think after decreasing their resistances they got steadfast (doubling their resistance in defense) also note the increased HP... So I'm not so sure of the trend of decreasing it defensive abilities. Also one possible reason for increasing damage from (4-3)? to 5-3 was to increase the damage of a ...

Re: Dwarvish guardsmen (in 1 vs 1)

I've never had a good time using Guardsmen, so don't take my word on this, but my experience is along the lines of what ShakeZula mentioned. A guardsman is time. Yes, the enemy will eventually kill it, if left to their own devices. No, it probably won't do decent damage in return. No, it will not be...

Re: Experiences on small maps

Okay, I was thinking about the absurdly small maps, where whoever goes first can grab the center village, and defend them to win the game economically. Those are silly, and I am not convinced the attempts to balance them have worked. What you are describing is the standard advantages of defense. I w...

Re: Tiny help with Drakes

People keep saying "a little bit" faster. That is incorrect. 6MP and flying is a lot faster. Why? Because speed is relative. A drake fighter can fight during the day, and fly straight away during nightfall. 6mp and flying means that there is no case where a 5 MP unit can catch up. It will be one hex...

Re: How to counter Ghost spam as Knalgans

Ghosts always have 18 health, thunders do 18 damage. 50% resistance means 9 damage, or two hits to kill the ghost. Chance to hit is always 50% Thus: 2 thunderers = 25% chance to kill 3 thunderers = 50% chance to kill 4 thunderers = 68.75% chance to kill 5 thunderers = 81.25% chance to kill Not reall...

Re: many questions

If you know that MP stands for Multiplayer, a lot of it is pretty clear. campaigns - Single-player campaigns. MP campaign - Multiplayer campaigns MP era - an era (set of factions) for multiplayer MP factions - a single faction to add to some era, again for multiplayer MP map-pack - a set of maps for...

Re: How to defend against village-snatching distractions?

Well, the map from the most recent replay was kind of big. I tend to consider Freelands, Hamlets, Weldyn, Caves of the Basilisk, etc. to be "normal" sized. Elensefar Courtyard, Crescent Lake, etc. are "big." Den of Onis is small, and a particularly good example of a map where saving some of your st...

Re: Balanced Map-Packs

Well, following the ladder-map lead turned up a variety of maps over at http://forums.wesnoth.org/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=29731 Things seem nifty, though Astral Sea seems a bit problematic in that Loyalists, Rebels, and Northies all can't win against a flying leader who runs off of the main map. Where ...

Re: How to defend against village-snatching distractions?

I do want to point out that I qualified that statement with "frequently" and "on smaller maps." You did a pretty good job of picking out when you don't want to  I'll add another one, though: If you only have one castle and it's far from the front, getting those units moving sooner is probably...

Balanced Map-Packs

I play pure multiplayer, and I have gotten fairly tired of the same old few maps, and so consequently, I went through the add-ons for more maps. What I found was fairly disappointing. Most of the multiplayer 1v1 maps that I saw were about as balanced as the randomly generated maps. Some heavily favo...

Re: How to defend against village-snatching distractions?

I'm not an expert player at all, but I think the point is not really saving gold (which is a nice byproduct nonetheless), but rather leaving some budget for a few adaptative recruits, depending on the enemy. Say you're playing as loys against elves (or drakes). If you take 3 spearmen, thinking "the...

Re: How to defend against village-snatching distractions?

I very much agree with Caphriel, with a few notes added on: First, determine the distance between your castle and your enemy's castle. Find the midpoint; that's approximately where the battle lines will be drawn, depending on faction matchup. (...) The line of territory division will generally be pe...

Re: How to defend against village-snatching distractions?

A note by ME after reading your (Capheial) post. "A lot of my problems seem to come from not being very on top of things. If I'm going to be serious about this game, I'll need to know exactly where my units are, where they can go, and what can reach them." Do you agree with that being the main lacki...
