Re: Elven Dance

West, I see you've been around these days. Maybe you missed the new version I posted. I must have, sorry! As I think I've said before, this is a nice little piece. It has a very cool medieval early music kind of feel and it reminds me a lot of parts of the Conan the Barbarian soundtrack (original m...

Re: Voice Acting Tips?

And West  from a professional side, you might be right. But Andrettin is just trying to "pimp" his scenario and we don't all own top notch equipment, nor the money to buy it. That's the whole point, if you can't make a voice recording that sounds at least somewhat professional, then text i...

Re: Voice Acting Tips?

I have three great tips that will save you a lot of time: 1. Don't even attempt it if you don't have any experience with (voice) acting. You have? Great, move on to... 2. Make sure you are 100% fluent in the language used, including dialects and other nuances. You are? Cool, then... 3. Get some dece...

Re: Missing good intense music?

I think the main reason Wesnoth doesn't have a whole lot of music in that vein is that virtual orchestral music is rather difficult and time consuming. Even a seemingly straightforward, mellow tune actually requires a lot of work in order to make everything sound convincing and "right". If you're go...

Re: gloomy haunting cave: acherontic

I think it's really cool. The more obvious analog synth blips detract from the atmosphere you're trying to build up though, IMO.

Re: Linux audio distro on wimpy laptop?

Well, I can offer you to fix most things remotely. That means some work to get me an access to your system and you need to thrust me by giving the root password away, at least for a short amount of time. Of course I would be able to install all kind of backdoors on your system. edit: I guess the as...

Re: Linux audio distro on wimpy laptop?

Indeed, maybe as a musician, Linux is just not the right choice for you anyway. It isn't, I know that. But against all odds I like Linux and I'm sort of nurturing the hope that some day, preferably soon, it will do what I need it to do without quirks and bugs and having to spend days reading messag...

Re: Going Windows!

I see what you mean Dugi (and I hope everyone realizes that I wasn't being completely serious with my previous post) but let me tell you, I have been a Windows user for... 16 years now I think? And I have yet to encounter a software issue that couldn't be solved one way or another. At least not sinc...

Re: Going Windows!

I second this. Win can be the best when you want only to do trivial things. If not, you must find your way through a whole bunch of esoteric windows, if only the thing is possible. In my company, someone tried to set up a firewall on a window box and finally had to give up. And that's right, XP and...

Re: Linux audio distro on wimpy laptop?

Thanks fabi! Ubuntu Studio does not have Unity, it runs Gnome. I even tried turning compositing off to see if it made any difference on the high CPU usage, but it didn't. I actually don't think it's a graphics issue, I read several posts from other people having the same issue with various flavors o...

Re: Linux audio distro on wimpy laptop?

It's an SiS something-or-other card... after having gone through the whole xrandr song and dance routine a couple of times without success I suspected that it might indeed be a driver issue. So I went looking for SiS drivers but according to the info that I found SiS drivers should already be presen...

Re: Linux audio distro on wimpy laptop?

Well this could have gone better. I've now tried Ubuntu Studio and Tango Studio. Both were unusable. The general performance was acceptable but both distros had the CPU running hot as heck -- ~70C as opposed to ~45-50C in Win XP. I've now installed Crunchbang, which is of course not an audio distro ...

Re: Elven Dance

It should definitely be possible to put something nice together from EWQL and Miroslav. In fact the woodwinds are the only part of Miroslav that don't make me cringe so by all means, give it a shot if you find the project file :)

Re: Elven Dance

I can't believe this topic is more than four years old. Actually, it's only a little over three ;) Still, the latest version was never reviewed. Any chance this may end up in the mainline? West? In its present state, no. With better samples, possibly. In terms of realism it's far from convincing, b...

Re: Linux audio distro on wimpy laptop?

Thanks Dugi, I'm installing Ubuntu Studio as we speak. Running it from the DVD seemed to work fine so I figured I might just go ahead and try. We'll see how it goes.
