(1) Medium, 1.1.7 (2) somewhat hard (7) (3) I'm not sure if I was supposed to head North first and West next with all my troops. However, things were quite clear after that. (4) The initial dialogue was a bit messy (possibly the translation again.) (5) Not getting my point units killed by lv3 Trolls...

Yesterday, I tried to answer this thread, but the answer soon grew to a generic discussion on good storywriting, and I decided to put it on its own thread instead: see http://www.wesnoth.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12317 I don't exactly know the Lavinians and the Marauders, so my comments will be on a...

I would prefer not to see this ability ever. It makes attacking your opponent's Keep a real bother. It's too much of a defensive advantage to be considered balanced, not to mention it makes a really annoying battle tactic possible . . . 1. Make scouts and capture villages 2. Hoarde gold 3. Wait unt...

One related idea is to have a recruit count: you can only recruit a certain number of units during a campaign. This can resemble the limited manpower available. Alternatively, recruiting can be disabled and a fixed recall list provided. Another way is to make recruiting substantially harder (like, f...

Re: Storywriting guide for epic campaigns

I'm also not sure that hooking people into playing "crappy, repetitive, or boring" campaigns by dangling the story in front of them is a very good design principle. I'm not suggesting that, see point 8. :) . I can agree that no story will save a bad engine, or boring scenario design, but I'm pointi...

I have been pointed out that only having two lines of recruitable units might be too little, and might lead to a boring gameplay. What's worse is that both lines are actually mixed fighters, the warrior line gaining leadership at level 3, and the hunter line gaining either ambush at level 2, or extr...

Storywriting guide for epic campaigns

I'm trying to assemble here my knowledge about writing epic campaigns. I'll use examples from a few favorite games or series, beware of spoilers. I'll try to make a check-list what a good epic campaign should contain, which could then be used when discussing plots in other people's campaigns. 1. The...

This is the exact reason why I never play MP with people I don't know IRL.

I'd disallow cheating (like taking control of opponent's units) in MP games, except for testing purposes, which could be identified with a nice little flag during the game start.

(1) medium, 1.1.7 (2) not very difficult, 5 (3) clear, the shroud was not much trouble (4) where did the drakes come from? (or was that another translation error) and why would owaec suggest going to that abandoned castle? (5) trolls on the mountains at night (6) fun (7) (7) the gryphon was kind of ...

I noticed the oponent gets a 0-0 stats when I am attacking and I have 0-0 stats when defending in some terrains. This sounds like you have a version conflict. In the stable version (1.0.2), the ranges are "short" and "long", in the development version 1.1.7, the ranges are "melee" and "ranged". The...

Imo the shine looks a bit funny, I've always thought holy swords to be shining everywhere, inluding the guard.

Really cool units... Some of the crusaders and priests would fit perfectly in my Kalevala campaign as Danish and Swedish invaders.

Hmm, since this seems to have become an ideas thread, I'll post my own ones too: Transport - in the beginning of turn, give all adjacent units water movement cost=1 for one turn only Example - when this unit attacks / engages in combat, all adjacent friendly units (possibly of a certain type only) g...

(1) medium, 1.1.7. (2) trivial (1) (3) not very clear (4) good and novel idea (5) none; the orcs just ran after my General and didn't dare to attack him (even though he had holy attacks), as long as I stayed on the grassland I was OK, in the end I stacked the general with the other units but still w...
