Adding units to factions in order to balance them vs. specific EE factions is often the only way that balance (in either branch, 1.2.x or 1.3.x, we have versions for both) and besides, the mermaid initiate needed to be used somewhere... Right... but why do 3 of the default factions not have any uni...

Balancing

I just took a look at this, and only read the last 3-4 pages of the thread, so apologies if what I'm saying has either been said before, or is inaccurate. Firstly, I assume you aren't changing unit specs if that unit exists in mainline, correct? If that's the case, I would hesitate before changing K...

I agree the Ghulam al Rami doesn't excel in any one area, it does have some of the best staying power of all the cavalry, with it's good defense, multiple attacks and high hitpoints. It also gives a lot for the lowest cost. I would suggest that the Ghuulam al Rami isn't awesome, but may be a little...

Wow, I was so off. I see now that you want to calculate the variance of say, 4 attacks with damage 5 and chance to hit of 60% along with 3 attacks with 2 damage and 70% chance to hit, and not the variance of attacks doing damage 5,5,5,0,3,0. Yes, but you need to do it per strike, rather than per ba...

What is wrong with algorithm 1 at wikipedia? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algorithms_for_calculating_variance You can keep O(1) memory and output variance in O(1) time in an online fashion by just keeping track of the number of events, the sum of the events, and the sum of the events squared. Umm.....

I wanted to do this at one point, but I couldn't figure out the correct way to calculate variance. I got as far as figuring out the variance of a sum of independently parameterized Bernoulli's. But the problem I had was when each bernoulli distribution got multiplied by strike damage. That scales it...

Actually, you have to compare saurians vs. the other drakes, not saurians vs. other faction units. Saurians take less damage than drakes under all conditions except when compared to a clasher facing a non-dextrous archer. this is incorrect. saurians take 5 dmg from dextrous and non dextrous elven a...

(2) poor defense in hills/grass: force it onto these - how? make them assault you; yes this is always a good idea, and another obvious one. of course u want to try and lure an elf off of a forest tile. It may seem obvious, but it often isn't implemented very well. As Noy said in some thread, it is ...

Could everyone be nice to one another? Debates are fine, but being mean? condescending? I think that's going too far. Ad hominems are worthless, and really only serve to make you disliked by everyone, even though s/he may support your viewpoint: argue over your opinions, not your personalities. Agr...

I agree with the above, but i think the relative difficulty of drakes has additional causes. The names, appearances, and roles of drake units are unfamiliar. You can't infer much about what an individual drake unit can do by looking at it or reading it's name. The divergent learning curve isn't a b...

Firstly, thanks for your detailed feedback Yogin. I've already put a lot of it in place (hopefully will be releasing it shortly). You're welcome. (1) The ship scenario is kinda cool and interesting. Neat concept. Thanks. I was really happy I managed to implement that. I just thought of a cool idea....
