Probably creation of such images can be automatized by WML (AFAIK there is some kind of interaction with system) - check if convert is available and proceed :)

I am from northern hemisphere and voted right-to-left because IMO its playing better with maps of Wesnoth east on the right, west on the left. Sun moving in opposite direction is intuitive only when thinking about these things apart. Seeing them besides each other and contradicting would be strange.

Don't have possibility to download whole CVS by cvs, updating is possible.
