Re: How to enjoy hard campaigns when they go wrong

If you can think of other questions that I should be asking myself as I play, that might be helpful, but I probably have enough to go on for now. I may have something... Though I'm not sure if it's useful, and I don't know if it's fun to ask yourself. "What role does a unit have based on it's stats...

Re: How to enjoy hard campaigns when they go wrong

On hard difficulty, there's usually many enemy units around. Don't let them go to waste, use them. Try to level more units, so even if one of your high-level units die, you still have a spare one of the same type on the recall list. Since it's your second playthrough, you might remember which scenar...

Re: When are Javelineers useful?

in other games Javelineers are usually anti-archer units, so i guess that's how they work here too. In other games, there are true ranged attacks. A ranged anti-archer unit isn't equally important in Wesnoth since any unit (melee and ranged) that can survive the archer's attack can take the anti-ar...

Re: A different way to look at the Intelligent trait (SP)

There are also some modifications that make the AMLA more interesting by providing additional abilities or more damage or moves. For these situations, intelligent can become very powerful, since you can get the AMLAs earlier and more of them faster. Actually, some of these mods can make AMLA totally...

Re: How to kill a Yeti without taking 1 hp of damage.

Well, removing a Yeti from active battle can be done by units from various add-ons: Some units can turn an enemy unit into stone permanently, and some do this without dealing damage iirc. However, while the Yeti won't be able to attack, move, or extend a ZoC, it will still stand there and block the ...

Re: How to kill a Yeti without taking 1 hp of damage.

I guess this requires to have a ranged poison weapon, which is something that for most factions and in most campaigns is difficult to get.

Re: When are Javelineers useful?

otzenpunk, you made some excellent points there. I searched the unit tree, and found several more lv3 units with (more or less) balanced melee and ranged attacks: - Hurricane Drake - Drake Flameheart - Dwarvish Sentinel - Dwarvish Explorer - Fugitive - Elvish Outrider - Elvish High Lord - Elvish Ave...

Re: When are Javelineers useful?

Just let him level up into a 'master javelineer' or maybe 'athlete' with 10-3 or 11-3 melee damage, something like 16-2 or 11-3 ranged, about 62–65 hitpoints, and maybe even an additional moving point, like royal guards get as well. Your "Athlete"-Idea gives me another idea: The lv3 Javelineer coul...

Re: When are Javelineers useful?

On his own, the Javelineer is a quite powerful unit (40% pierce resistance, 8-3 melee, 11-2 ranged), it's just that the niche of a melee/ranged Spearman is confined to hybrid defense or duels. ... However, a L3 advancement may give additional incentives to choose him over the Pikeman, and may even ...

Re: When are Javelineers useful?

If I was rebalancing the game, I'd give Javelineers skirmisher and ranged marksmen to give them a role in hunting down low-health enemies. Not a bad idea. I like the part with the skirmisher, since spearthrowers were historically often used as skirmishers IIRC. A different idea to make the Javeline...

Re: When are Javelineers useful?

I think Javelineers are mainly useful for defending. They deal both enough melee and enough ranged damage to deter an enemy level 1 from carelessly attacking them. If the javelineer survives the attack, he can deal damage to the weapon the enemy is weaker at, thus reducing retailatory damage. I thin...

Re: Maximum damage from a single strike, or in a single turn

I checked the Eastern Invasion Campaign. There is probably no Chocobone there (didn't find it via text search in all scenario files). However, EI adds Skeleton Rider (lv1) and Bone Knight (lv2). The Bone Knight has a charge attack and -100% resistance to arcane (should probably be -50% and was forgo...

Re: Maximum damage from a single strike, or in a single turn

There's no reason multiplayer shouldn't count. The 'rules,' such as they exist, are basically just 'it has to be possible in the vanilla game' - otherwise Legend f the Invincibles (and similar add-ons) would absolutely dominate this thread. 1.14 and 1.15 are both fine. In ideal conditions - lv4 lea...

Re: Return from Captivity, Scenario 5, dragon land. pls hlp

Do you have any clarifications? Maybe a safegame from the scenario start, so we know the units you can recall and recruit? After cheating my way through to that scenario, I believe that the level 3 archers you mentioned are probably elvish sharpshooters. These units have an extremely high ranged dam...

Re: Easy Strategy that always wins: using the Elvish Sylph

Actually a Great Mage is more likely to beat an Elvish Sylph in 1v1 than not, even with slow. Thanks for the idea. I decided to do a little experiment with your theory: Set up a 1v1 local multiplayer game, use debug commands to summon 10 great mages + 10 Sylphs, have them fight under controlled cir...
