Re: The concentration of forces
A recent discussion in another thread has brought to mind another way to characterize the concentration of forces, so let's add sections XIII and XIV to the article, as follows. XIII. A QUANTIFIABLE METRIC The first unit brought to the main battleground is worth 1.0 unit. The second unit brought to ...

Re: Heir to the Throne hard permadeath victory
One thing that surprised me about your playstyle was the lack of healers - in most scenarios you only used one +8 healer and sometimes you didn't use any at all! I think you would have had a much easier time and avoided many of the close calls if you had used two +8 healers every scenario. I think ...

Re: Heir to the Throne hard permadeath victory
@max_torch: You saw that, did you? I believe that that was the closest of about four close calls during the campaign. Because it happened at a fairly relaxed moment rather than at a battle's critical point of decision, it was also the least expected close call. You are right: the RNG saved me there....

Re: Heir to the Throne hard permadeath victory
I would like to look at your replays and see the way you played. The 24 replays, bundled into a TAR file, are attached. (If the format is inconvenient, please advise.) Note: a permadeath player plays early scenarios more often than late. Therefore, the replays may show more skill early than late. W...

Heir to the Throne hard permadeath victory
At hard difficulty, can Heir to the Throne be won without scenario restarts? If you lose a scenario, it's permadeath: you go back to the beginning—not of the scenario—but of the campaign. That is the challenge. Four years since my first attempt, I have done it. Has it been done before? By whom? The ...

Re: The concentration of forces
@octalot, your early comment is acknowledged and appreciated. Such a battle tip as you suggest would seem edifying to me. Also, tangentially, your early comment has jarred loose a stray thought or two from my mind, adding to the article tenth, eleventh and twelfth sections as follows. Section XII re...

The concentration of forces
Wesnoth players who wish to improve their battle results can learn from Napoleon. [Napoleon held that, in] order to concentrate superior combat strength in one place, economy of force must be exercised in other places. Economy of force requires the acceptance of prudent risks in selected areas to a...

Re: Simple strategy in Httt: Blackwater Port on Hard
You afford a new approach to a familiar scenario. Bravo. For information, one can earn the special bonus at hard difficulty in this scenario, fairly consistently, in the following alternate way. The southwestern woods are favorable terrain for elves. Use them. On turn 1, recruit/recall six elves. Re...

Re: Strategy, Operations, and Tactics
Say that you have a couple of units behind your front line. You can either use them as a reserve or send them on a flanking movement. Lacking a military officer's training, I do not understand the application of the operational reserve very well. In Battle for Wesnoth, the cost of voluntarily holdi...

Re: Strategy, Operations, and Tactics
(As for the Quick trait: I love seeing it on 4-5 MP units but it's the last thing I want to see on a 6+ MP unit - they get to the battle faster but they also die a lot faster! My favorite trait, by far, is resilient.) Now that you mention it, I have never been able to decide whether I like quick or...

Re: Strategy, Operations, and Tactics
Good framework. I would like to adopt it. So, one situation that gives me considerable trouble during SP is this: You've got 7 to 10 units in attack range of the foe and the daylight is momentarily favorable, so you have to kill as many units as possible as fast as possible, even at the cost of some...

Re: Heir to the Throne, scenarios 7 through 10
(10 Gryphon) I've found sylphs and shydes to be invaluable in this one. The terrain in this scenario is just awful to handle. Three questions, please: At hard difficulty, can one get sylphs and shydes before (10 Gryphon)? I'd like to try that. How should I go about it? I had been feeding experience...

Heir to the Throne, scenarios 7 through 10
No new strategies or tips have been posted during the past week, so here are some: In Heir to the Throne, hard difficulty, scenario 7, "Crossroads": The trouble with this scenario is that it precedes scenario 8, "The Princess of Wesnoth," which precedes scenario 9, "The Vall...

Re: Old Portrait for Konrad & Li'sar
UPDATE I have recently seen the new portraits in a different screen aspect ratio. Thinner and taller, they look much better, especially Konrad. I am growing used to the new Konrad. I think that I like him, after all -- if anyone cares. My earlier comment, which disliked the new Konrad and doubted t...

[The mainline campaigns] have a much higher visibility than the addon campaigns, both in-game and out-of-game; ie newcovers to Wesnoth are far more likely to start with the mainline campaigns and judge the game based on them They set the standard in quality and content for the addon campaigns It ca...
