Re: Beginner Campaign: The South Guard

Having the Aethenwood between the sea and a big (impenetrable?) mountain range suggests to me that it's a 'temperate rainforest' (think New Zealand and Japan). The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of a "temperate rainforest"-based geography, with it's band of thick forest r...

Re: Beginner Campaign: The South Guard

I think you're doing a great job with this, and props for taking it so seriously. Thank you, Jozrael :) I appreciate that this may seem like a bit of a waste of time (it's a GAME after all! :) ) but it helps me get my thinking straight, and I do honestly believe that players will appreciate this ki...

Re: Beginner Campaign: The South Guard

Nobody ever said this had to be a geographically feasible forest of course. :D Well, I think that so long as it doesn't hurt the story or other Wesnoth canon, we should aim for some realism - players are used to Earth geography, so it is good to build on those foundations. I don't mind either idea,...

Re: Beginner Campaign: The South Guard

One thing that catches the eye about the map you made is the trees. I can see lines in the forest where you just dragged the tool across to place the trees. Hi Turuk, Fear not -- this is just a sketch to work out the locations of places etc :) The finished map will not have that kind of ... rough.....

Re: Beginner Campaign: The South Guard

The Aethenwood is one of the largest forests visible on the main map, and the forest you've drawn completely dwarfs it. Indeed it does :) Only scattered few outlaws lived in the wildlands south of Kerlath, a bastion of the ancient heart forest of the Great Continent so dense and gloomy that even el...

Re: Beginner Campaign: The South Guard

Here's a sketch with everything moved North about 50km:
Spoiler:
Is that better? More like Elensefar-size, and seems to gel with the current bigmap.jpg - distance Fort Tahn to the Aethenwood is the same as Tahn-Westin/Thenin?

Re: Beginner Campaign: The South Guard

Hi beetlenaut, Don't worry about the story text. If the map makes sense, the story can easily be changed to match it. Well, of course, but if we alter the story text too much, it won't be The South Guard any more! :) I really like the way the campaign story flows, the way the text sets up the atmosp...

Re: Beginner Campaign: The South Guard

Hi Jozrael, Hi zookeeper, I am not sure myself about revealing the areas of the map -- I'm thinking of old maps which basically had empty areas with "here be dragons", but as you say, we'll have to see how it actually looks. About the size of the province - I kind of agree with you, zookee...

Re: Beginner Campaign: The South Guard

Well, I've been working on this on my own in any case, and here are the results. A rough sketch of the map I'm making, and some explanation of the thinking which has led me to draw it the way I have done. Firstly, I decided that the Knigdom of Wesnoth is about the same size as France -- a rather lar...

Re: Beginner Campaign: The South Guard

Hi Jozrael, Sorry, I didn't make it clear -- I meant the "Indy-style red line" map that is shown before the scenario, not the hex-based map the scenario takes place on! :) images/story/bigmap.jpg, to be precise, or a replacement for it. I attach the current one to clear up any possible mis...

Re: Beginner Campaign: The South Guard

Thanks, Turuk! :) I'll fire away, then: With regards to making a new campaign map for TSG, what I wanted to ask is: what is the scale of the main Wesnoth map? The second half of TSG has Deoran and his band marching for many weeks through the forest, and then for many weeks back. This seems like a ve...

Re: Beginner Campaign: The South Guard

I played through all the scenarios in both branches on Easy the other day, and am particularly impressed with the Bandit branch -- the truly epic feel of Pebbles in the Stream, Tides of War, and the Epilogue is top notch! I wasn't that keen on the Elves branch, but more on that another time... I am ...

Re: Beginner Campaign: The South Guard

the difficulties are not based on how familiar the player is with other types of strategy games, or TBS games in particular. The difficulties should be rated in terms of relation to Wesnoth. I have to say: I am not convinced, Turuk :) Both methods would be consistent through all Wesnoth scenarios, ...
