I'd suggest 1.14 since master is not currently in the best state, but fixes like this will almost always be added to both branches anyway, so ultimately it's up to you.

Another question, I suppose, would be whether to enable the Wformat-security option. Wesnoth currently doesn't output any warnings when it's enabled though, and I don't know how useful it would actually be.

Based on the Debian build log , Wesnoth is already built there with -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 , -fstack-protector-strong , and -Wl,-z,relro .
