[some pretty good stuff] Still, I disagree with the idea to counter goldstashing with goldstashing. At best that's settling for a draw. IMHO the best way is to force the opponents hand by attacking. Balancing, most likely. I believe some matchups on some maps would be over before they started if one side got an extra turn or two to build up for the first strike. (Drakes vs Ud on Den of Onis starting 1st watch, perhaps?) And while Isar's shouldn't be used for balancing arguements random starting...

Meh, I consider luck something to work with, not against... If average luck gets me results my opponent probably made a mistake. If bad luck is catastrophic I made a mistake.

for what it's worth, I find that high numbers of strikes is better for reliable offense, while high damage, low strikes are better for defense. A lot of the time dealing 5 damage is little better than doing none - so being certain to get at least one hit in return for a lesser chance to do some real damage is (imho) a bad trade, at least when attacking. In the initial recruit faster units often result in being able to take villages earlier, thus earning/saving 3 gold per village.
