Re: Over the Northern Mountains (Cold :P)

You might be right. As you've probably noticed, I've sort of conveniently ignored the advice that you posted earlier in this thread. Not because I don't value your input -- I really do! -- I just know that trying to rework a piece that is more or less finished will only lead to it being unfinished ...

Re: Over the Northern Mountains (Cold :P)

It's getting better, West. Way cool. A couple of quick quips: I hear the same rhythm repeated throughout the entire duration of the song in one instrument or another, and I think it would be beneficial to mix it up a bit - especially with percussion. At 1:06, the woodwinds/strings/bells can stand to...

Re: West's music development ideas

You know West, these are all very good ideas but I don't think that the system we have in place (the bulletin board) is sufficient to keep track of everything. I've been trying to come up with a decent system for keeping track of songs, revisions, letting people comment on them, etc, but as of yet t...

Re: Too cute for Wesnoth?

Thanks for the advice on whistles, West! I'm curious as to what kind of mods I'd have to do on the whistles to make them sound better, though... I think I see what you mean, yes. The root note in the intro is an F, and the pickup is an F major. Thanks for the heads up, I'll se what I can do about it...

Re: Too cute for Wesnoth?

New version with intro, some unpolished whistle playing and various other tweaks. Not to get this topic back on track or anything, but this is a very nice piece, West. You've inspired me to buy a tin flute, the sound is incredible. Any suggestions of what to buy? :) A couple of minor suggestions: T...

Re: Over the Northern Mountains (Cold :P)

This "mindset of randomness" that you mention is a big problem for me. I seem to have only two ways of composing: either I string together parts of more or less unrelated music (Traveling Minstrels), or I write three or so different parts that I repeat like in a typical pop song (The King...

Re: Non-Wesnoth works

I'd forgotten about this thread. I did something a while back for a brass quintet. The recording is not great (as I intended this to be played live), but you can listen to it here: http://gnexp.com/songs/bragtime.mp3. If any of y'all want sheet music let me know.

Re: the king is dead

Why can't you just do a recording from the audio-out to the line-in on your sound card? You can use Audacity to record it and use the LAME library to encode to MP3. I think that would be a bit simpler.

Re: Triumph

I feel a bit foolish, I believe I listened to the piece with my speakers turned down too much. It actually does not sound as light as I thought. May I take back my suggestion? Also, if most people like it the way it is--that likely means you already know what you are doing. Good job. No matter how ...

Re: Triumph

This is a very nice composition with good pace and flow. Although there is nothing wrong with it the way it is, I would prefer a heavier sound. I'm not sure whether it sounds so light because of my speakers or the instrument selection or the overall range of the piece but the sound doesn't seem ful...

Re: Triumph

With the EastWest/Quantum Leap samples that I have, there are front recorded samples (of the hall) and rear recorded samples. With stereo only, I have to put the samples together. With surround sound, I can put the rear recorded samples in the back two channels. This better gives the illusion of bei...

Re: A Question about MIDI Devices

I've had success getting MIDI out on OS X from M-Audio's MIDISport. You can find them on ebay for fairly cheap: http://is.gd/3LQD

Surround Sound

I'm waiting for my surround equipment to get here (I've tried a few times already... long story, won't go into it here) and was wondering if anyone would be willing to give feedback on a surround sound OGG export. Feedback like "it works" or "it doesn't" would be appreciated: htt...
