But sometimes you want a unit to do less damage, e.g. when you are weakening it so another unit can take the xp.

Wouldn't it be much easier to have two different attacks to choose from? In case of Paladin, there won't be many circumstances where you will really want a mixture of blade and holy damage in one turn, so you could just add another type of attack and let the player choose. In Heroes of Might and Magic all units have morale (except undead have always neutral). Good morale allows units to move again, while bad morale causes them to freeze in panic. Maybe make something like that? But in HoMM that only happens in battle, and it doesn't tend to have a large effect on out...

Yes, I forgot that for some games they don't shuffle the deck. But I'm not talking about card counting, which anyway doesn't guarantee winning every time, just makes it more probable. Pseudorandom does not equal predictable. What you are suggesting would be equivalent to saying that because croupiers can't shuffle cards truly randomly, you could go to casinos and win every time.
