I wanted to try it, but the unzip gave my only the campaign's cfg and pbl but the subdirectories aren't there ...

I prefer the swamps. But it is a question of how you like your army to develop. Midlands ==> More melee units will level Swamps ==> More mages will level, only real good melee units are the loyal HI, they are very easy to level there. It seems to be a general problem. After 5 days I finally get access and now it donnwloading at 5 or 10% of it's normal speed.

Normally there should be a new version of Elf War out somewhere next week.

It is been a while that I played it, but if I remember correctly you can recruit in the castle hexes in the middle. If you wait for the first on those keep tiles (high defense) you should be able to survive the mass of their attacks.
