Btw, what I don't understand (in regards to the "seeing something in the dark) is why dwarves are lawful. After all, they're supposed to see superbly in the dark.

I experience the same problem, with Wesnoth 1.1.2a and 1.1.7. I started playing on 1.1.2a and it worked fine for some time, but eventually I got this problem.
