I think the current format is one long string for the whole description, everywhere. If so, for technical reasons you're stuck with just one longish comment, too. IMO unit texts are not so big (yet?). Splitting race backgrounds might not be the worst idea though - these tend to be really gigantic. B...

Nobody has mentioned yet the possibility to render 3d models into sprites. This would have little use in Wesnoth which focuses on animations, but for games that need rather "just" rotated items - like transport simulators - it's a blessing. Model once, no animation, press "render"...
